While developing the trivia quiz game QUENCH we researched heaps of online trivia quiz games, both websites and apps, to see if there was a place out there for our offering. Here are some of the best and most popular online trivia quiz games we found and enjoyed playing. If you have played any of these, let us know your thoughts, we would love to hear your feedback.

Sporcle
We found this to be one of the best websites for online trivia with over 4 billion quizzes played to date. This site is frequently visited by the best of the best in the world of trivia quizzes, both quiz master and contestant. Even used as a training ground for ‘professional’ pub quizzers, the most competitive of players can speed test their general trivia quiz knowledge and specialty subjects too. The number of categories and the question bank is about the best we’ve seen. Scrupulously checked for grammatical mistakes and factual correctness, these guys are trivia quiz gods!
You can also submit your own quiz to Sporcle and they will gladly add it to their vast quiz library.
The website may not be the most modern or slick looking and is definitely more about content than design. There is an app too, so you can quiz on the go which might be a handy way to pass the time on occasion. Ads can be removed, for a small cost, otherwise it is free to play. Unfortunately, there is no opportunity of winning prizes, it is all about the prestige and feeling of accomplishment…or not in some cases. Note to self - must try harder!
Quiz Planet
We found this was a unique way of playing trivia online in bitesize amounts, as the format here is only 3 questions - so short and sweet. By engaging with Facebook, you can challenge your friends and contacts and keep connected. Also play with random players across the country to test your knowledge with actually quite interesting questions. Be prepared to share your personal data and be subjected to adverts, as these are the things that keep many trivia quiz apps in business.
We liked that you could submit your own quiz questions and there is a live leader board to keep the game exciting. It is available in 28 languages although our team were unable to test this as we don’t like showing off! Quiz Planet is only available to play as an app.
Quizando
Another website for playing trivia quizzes, offering a plethora of different quizzes to choose from and enjoy. Some are free entry with small cash prizes to win and some quizzes you pay to enter. There are live quiz events happening regularly to keep players coming back for more.
The facility to host your own trivia game has probably been a popular feature during lockdown seeing as people hadn’t been able to get to their local weekly pub quiz. This got a thumbs up from us all round.
HQ Trivia
This has to be one of the best and most successful trivia quiz game apps ever. There is a live jackpot game, but it is played at 2am UK time, which is great for night owls and insomniacs. The reason for this is that HQ Trivia is U.S based and this is also reflected in the questions, particularly in the categories of sport and TV which tend to have a US focus.
Still if you are not in it to win big money and don’t mind the advertisements you can play any time of day and the game provides a good level of question for most, meaning a good combination of easy and difficult questions. As for the jackpot itself - you only need look at the leaderboard to see the wins are not huge when shared between a number of players that tie.
We really liked the design of this app which was simple but functional without too many distractions. There is no web version for HQ Trivia so download from the App Store or Play Store.
How will QUENCH be different?
QUENCH is all about plain vanilla and no smoke and mirrors. Initially, QUENCH will be a pay to play weekly trivia event with the chance to win genuine cash prizes. A jackpot prize plus 100 smaller cash prizes will be paid out every week to the cleverest and fastest.
Although the game is a race against the clock you can also pause the timer between questions in order to go and make a cup of tea, make a call or something equally urgent. There will be no penalty as it is all part of our genius format!
